What is the Dragon Boat Festival?

The Dragon Boat Festival, or Duānwǔ Jié (端午節), is one of the biggest traditional celebration in China that has been held for over two thousand years. To commemorating the death of the famous poet Qu Yuan. This year, the Dragon Boat Festival falls on Saturday 31st May. People typically celebrate by gathering with friends and family to enjoy dragon boat races, making zongzi (sticky rice dumpling) and sharing delicious festive foods.


What is Zongzi and How Does It Taste?

Zongzi (粽) or Joong in Cantonese is a must-have dish that people enjoyed during the Dragon Boat Festival. It comes in a wide variety of flavours, depending on the region.

In Southern China, zongzi are tend to be larger and heavier, due to the variety ingredients like pork belly, Chinese sausages, salted egg yolks, and red beans. They are typically wrapped tightly in bamboo leaves or reed leaves.

In contrast, Northern zongzi are usually simpler and smaller. They often contain fewer ingredients, but more plain sticky rice or lighter fillings like red beans and dates. The flavours are usually milder, and the shape is sometimes more compact and neat.
